Most people read this as an historical account, and it's a good one, but I wanted to understand Black Elk's metaphysics: his visions, his rituals, his magic. I grew up having similar otherworldly experiences like him, meeting and talking to higher beings, and I still do on occasion. Like him, I often didn't understand a great deal of what I saw, or what to do with the knowledge and power. I guess it's nice to know that someone as respected as Black Elk was just as clueless as I was, half the time, haha. Still, the book really helped me make sense of a few strange matters that had been puzzling me for many years. For instance, he describes how a powerful vision can stay with you your entire life, and how you can draw upon its power to do other magics later. I have done this, any number of times, although I never quite understood how it worked before I read his descriptions of the process. Anyway, if you have ever had any personal dealings with the Higher Powers, this can be a fascinating and instructive book.

Enjoyed this book, great story, well written.
One of the most moving and enlightening books I have ever read. It should be required reading in our public schools.
great book
This book is quite difficult to read on many levels - but the challenge it presents to mainstream, American readers is worth stretching one's mind to encompass.

As with any written account of an oral presentation, it often seems as if it lacks polish. But its directness is part of its art. It is not a story told to entertain. It is a recounting of an important story and a vision unfulfilled, a factor that puzzles the sympathetic reader as much as it seemed to grieve Black Elk himself.

The value to many readers lies in hearing a different point of view no only on history but also on valid ways of knowing and thinking. As a counterpoint to European epistemology, this book is worth the effort to see the world through another set of eyes.
This book is one of the best books written about American Indian culture.
Very enjoyable read!
Black Elk was a Sioux Shaman during a critical period in tribal survival.
Black Elk speaks, and when he does, his feeble voice tells his story of a different culture.
Forget Zinn -- this is A Peoples' History of the North American West - perceived through the eyes of our 'enemies'
One of my "pet peeves" concerns how history is rewritten to serve special interests. The history of Native Americans has often been twisted to serve such interests, or even worse, simply suppressed. It's really refreshing to read about Native American history from the voice of one who lived it, from an exemplary American who happens to have been a member of the Sioux people. John Niehardt, who went to the trouble of documenting Black Elk's personal history and observations, did a great job in collecting and organizing the information. The book reads well and maintains interest throughout. Being that Black Elk was also a medicine man - and a respected one at that - the book has a ring of spirituality that places it well above mere history. If the reader is also a researcher into what makes our nation great, he cannot overlook this factor in the development of the American heritage.
